History Of V8 Supercars

The 80's:
Between the years 1985 and 1992 the Bathurst 1000 was running under international Group A rules.
They brought turbocharged vehicles into Australia in order to race under these rules. The first vehicle to arrive was the Ford Sierra turbo which dominated the race during the late 1980s.
In 1987, the race became a round of the short-lived World Touring Car Championship. Here competitors in that championship raced against the local teams.
Eggenberger's cars ran 1-2, but was disqualified months later due to bodywork irregularities, and awarding the race to local legend Peter Brock for the ninth (and last) time.

In the years 1988 and 89, Holden Commodores were chosen to be the favourite car.
In the years 1991 and 1992, turbo charged, four- wheel- drive Nissan Skyline GTR's were introduced and won.
The 1992 victory at Bathurst was debatable. Already being disliked by the Bathurst crowd, the race stopped after a huge storm which had caused a number of crashes, including the leading skyline.

The race was still awarded to the leading Skyline with drivers Jim Richards and Mark Skaife, who was in lead on the previous lap until the race came to a hault, much to the crowds dislikeness. Jim Richards memorably swore at the crowd from the winning podium.

From the years 1986-1987, Skyline R31's were driven, and ironically enough they didn't win any Bathurst first pla
ces.
